How dependent are you on nicotine?

Firstly let’s discuss how you can assess how severe your nicotine dependence is?

This test is called the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence.

You must ask yourself the following questions and answer them honestly and point yourself accordingly.

  1. How many cigarettes do you smoke daily?
  2. How soon after awakening do you smoke?
  3. Which cigarette would be most difficult to give up, the first in the morning or any other?
  4. Is it hard to refrain from smoking where it’s forbidden?
  5. Do you smoke on days where you are sick in bed?
  6. Do you smoke more often in the first few hours of the day relative to the rest of the day?

QUESTION 1

  1. Less than 10 give yourself a 0
  2. About 11-20, give yourself a 1
  3. 20-30, then give yourself a 2
  4. More than 30, give yourself a 3

QUESTION 2

  1. More than 5 mins give yourself a 3
  2. 6-30 mins give yourself a 2
  3. 31-60 mins give yourself a 1
  4. >60 mins give yourself a 0

QUESTION 3

  1. First in the AM give yourself a 1
  2. Any other cigarette give yourself a 0

QUESTION 4

  1. If yes give yourself a 1
  2. If no give yourself a 0

QUESTION 5

  1. If yes give yourself a 1
  2. If no give yourself a 0

QUESTION 6

  1. If yes give yourself a 1
  2. If no give yourself a 0

RESULTS

7-10 points = highly dependent

4-6 points = moderately dependent

Less than 4 points = minimally dependent
